Former India National Cricket Team players – Sunil Gavaskar and Ajay Jadeja – have slammed the Indian team management for sending the left-handed spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel to bat at No.4 ahead of the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli in the second Test against Bangladesh National Cricket Team in Mirpur.
While chasing a small 145-run target, India lost the wickets of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli inside 20 overs. At stumps on Day 3, India were at 45/4, with Axar and Jaydev Unadkat unbeaten and 100 runs away from the win. Notably, Axar was sent to bat at No.4 ahead of Kohli after the dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored just 6 runs.

Gavaskar said that sending Axar at No.4 would send a bad message to the “best batsman in the world” Kohli.
“It didn’t send a good message to Kohli. He is the best batsman in the world. Unless Kohli himself asked for it, then it’s a different matter. We don’t know what happened in the changing room. But it’s hard to understand. Axar has played well, of course,” he told Sony Sports at the end of Day 3.

“Irrespective of left-hander or not, let Rishabh Pant come into bat next tomorrow, Let this left-hand and right-hand experiment stop,” Gavaskar said.

Jadeja, meanwhile, felt that the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant should have been sent at No.4 if India needed a left-right combination.
“He is the world’s best player. 15 overs were left. Saba Karim said it could have been because of the left-right combination, which is an obvious thought, but then I feel – did Rishabh Pant take a sleeping pill? I will also say that it is easy for us to say this from here; we don’t know if someone was not feeling well,” Jadeja, who was part of the Hindi panel on Sony Sports, said.
