West Indies got knocked out from the race for qualification for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup after suffering a seven-wicket defeat against Scotland at the Harare Sports Club on July 1 in the Super Six stage of the World Cup Qualifiers. Notably, the two-time champions were eliminated after losing three consecutive games against Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and Scotland.

Lamenting the scenario, former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has said that West Indies’ downfall should be an example for everyone in world cricket. The 42-year-old stated that nothing is granted in the professional world and that growth in infrastructure and proper player management are critical factors for teams to be competitive at the international level.

“Downfall of West Indies cricket should be a lesson for all. Nothing granted in professional world. Infrastructural development & right management of the players r important ingredients to stay tall at international level. Two times world champions r out of the cricket worldcup 2023,” Hafeez tweeted.

Scotland beat West Indies by seven wickets in Super Six clash

Speaking of the match, West Indies were bundled out for a below-par 181 in a must-win game after being invited to bat by Scotland. Jason Holder top-scored with 45 off 79. Meanwhile, Brandon McMullen claimed a three-wicket haul, while Chris Sole, Mark Watt and Chris Greaves picked up two each.

Scotland did not start well with the bat as opener Christopher McBride was dismissed for a golden duck, however, Matthew Cross (74* off 107) and McMullen (69 off 106) led the charge as they helped their team chase the target in 43.3 overs. For the West Indies, Holder, Romario Shepherd, and Akeal Hosein took one wicket each.
